Unfortunately, even experts can't pinpoint the exact amount of time that it takes to get pregnant since there are many different factors that can influence conception, there are general time frames that most pregnancies follow along with. Below is more information on the amount of time it takes to get pregnant, and how long it takes the average couple to conceive.

The Fertilization Process

One common misunderstanding about pregnancy is that it conception occurs immediately after intercourse. The actual estimated time that it takes for the sperm to travel to the egg and fertilize is around six days after intercourse. Once it becomes fertilized, the egg will attach itself to the uterine wall, which can take anywhere between six and ten days. Once the egg is implanted, the body gives off special hormones to support the egg through its development, which marks the beginning of pregnancy. Adding all that up, it can take about 12 to 16 days for pregnancy to officially begin after intercourse.

For Couples Trying To Conceive

When actively trying to get pregnant, most couples typically take around 3 months to conceive. This time frame can change dramatically depending on a variety of factors including age and habits that could affect fertility such as smoking. About 60% of women get pregnant within 3 months, and 85% of women within the first year. If you have yet to get pregnant after a year of trying, it is recommended that you consult with a fertility specialist to see if there are any fertility issues, or if there are ways to improve the chances of getting pregnant.
